Desk Report:Police have arrested a young man named Rejoan Kabir alias Johnny (22) in the murder of 9-year-old Nusrat Jahan in Asashuni, Satkhira. On Monday afternoon, accused Rejoan Kabir confessed in court that he strangled the child Nusrat to death while trying to steal her earrings for drug money.
Earlier, Nusrat’s body was found on the bank of a pond in Agardari village of the upazila around 3 pm last Saturday. At a news briefing at the conference room of the Satkhira Police Superintendent at 1 pm today, Monday, Police Superintendent Mohammad Monirul Islam said that Rejoan Kabir of Agardari village in Asashuni was arrested on Sunday on charges of involvement in the murder of 9-year-old Nusrat Jahan. The arrested drug addict Rejoan Kabir confessed to the murder during initial interrogation by the police.Later, at around 5:30 pm on Monday, Rejoan Kabir gave a confessional statement under Section 164 of the Penal Code before Satkhira Senior Judicial Magistrate Mohidul Islam. Earlier, in the same court, Ajay Pain, the owner of Palash Jewelers in Budhata Bazar, Asashuni Upazila, the buyer of the stolen earrings, also gave a statement under Section 164 as a witness.
Citing a confessional statement, the investigation officer of the case, Sub-Inspector (SI) of Asashuni Police Station Md. Faisal said, Rezwan Kabir used to work in an elevator company in Dhaka. He returned to his village home after losing his job four-five months ago. Then he became addicted to drugs due to financial crisis. After failing to get money from his father, he planned to steal a pair of gold earrings from his neighbor Nusrat Jahan’s ears.
Describing the incident, accused Rezwan Kabir said in his statement that on Saturday morning, Nusrat Jahan was playing in front of her neighbor’s house when Rezwan called her. On the way, she tried to take off the earrings from her ears while eating turmeric on the banks of Solaiman Aziji’s pond. Nusrat stopped her and said she would tell her parents. Then Rezwan forcibly took off the earrings and strangled her to death. Then, so that no one could find the body, they tied Nusrat’s hands and feet and threw her on the bank of a pond next to the yellow field.
Investigation officer of the case Md. Faisal said that the buyer of the earrings, Ajay Pain, also testified in court as a witness. He said that Rejoan came to him on Saturday afternoon with a pair of earrings. He bought the pair of gold earrings weighing two annas for 9 thousand taka. A few months ago, Rejoan had sold a pair of earrings weighing four and a half annas of his mother for 20 thousand taka. Since then, he has known him. Rejoan mentioned that the pair of earrings belonged to his mother before selling them on Saturday.
